01 / Event context
What’s New About the Melbourne Marathon in 2026?
The Melbourne Marathon 2026 course has been substantially revised. Official changes include:
- Elevation gain reduced by up to 20%
- Birdwood Avenue to Domain Road climb at 36km removed
- Reverse direction to Beach Road with fewer turns across the route
- Wider corridors through expanded road and tram use
- Southbank Boulevard and Alexandra Avenue diversion removed
- Mass start format with rolling clearance
The organiser describes the revised route as "faster and flatter".
For runners who know the previous route, the practical change is the layout around the return from Beach Road. Use the official 2026 map for exact turns and landmarks during race week..
02 / Course
Melbourne Marathon 2026 Course: What Runners Need to Know
The official map shows the Melbourne Marathon course starting on Batman Avenue before heading south towards St Kilda Road, Albert Park and the Beach Road and Beaconsfield Parade section, then returning towards the city for the final approach to the MCG.
Start to 10km
The opening section moves away from the MCG towards the southern part of the course, with the 5km marker on St Kilda Road. Keep the opening effort controlled while the field settles.
10km to halfway
The route reaches the bayside section around Ormond Esplanade, Brighton and Beach Road. Hold your planned effort instead of reacting to runners around you.
Halfway to 32km
The course continues along Beach Road and Beaconsfield Parade before turning back towards Albert Park. This stretch carries the consistent fuelling and controlled pacing.
32km to the MCG
The route moves back through Albert Park and towards St Kilda Road before returning to the stadium. Protect your pace through the late kilometres, then use the final approach as your finishing section.
Module: interactive course strip. Each segment reveals kilometre range, terrain, landmarks and the decision it demands. Collapsed on load so the page opens cleanly on a phone.
03 / Pacing
How to Pace the Melbourne Marathon Without Blowing Up
Melbourne Marathon pacing fails in the first ten kilometres, not the last ten. The field is fresh, the road is crowded and the effort feels free. That is the trap.
0 to 10km, hold it back. Your opening pace should feel almost dull. If it feels good, you are going too hard. Seconds banked early are repaid with minutes after 30km.
10 to 30km, settle into rhythm. Lock onto your planned pace and stop doing arithmetic. Take your fuel on schedule, not when hunger or fatigue tells you to. By the time you feel empty, you are twenty minutes too late.
30 to 37km, protect the work. Small errors become expensive here. Hold form, shorten your stride if you need to and keep the effort steady while the pace drifts. Most people lose their race in this block.
37km to the MCG, race what is left. If you still have control, lift gradually. The finish inside the stadium pulls people along, so save something for it.
Opening 10km
Held back, almost easy
Middle 20km
Settled, repeatable
30 to 37km
Firm, controlled

04 / Preparation
How to Prepare for 42.195km in Melbourne
Fitness is built months out. Melbourne Marathon race week is about removing problems, not adding work.
The One Rule That Matters
Nothing on your body should be new. Shoes, socks, shorts, top, cap, watch strap and any layer should have already been through a long run at race effort. New kit on race day is how a good marathon turns into a painful one.
Race Week Priorities
Four things are worth protecting across the week:
- Sleep every night, not only Saturday
- Transport and start time confirmed
- Kit laid out early
- Familiar food
The night before matters less than people think. Two or three good nights earlier in the week carry more weight than one restless sleep before the alarm.
Taper anxiety is real, and Melbourne Marathon training advice rarely prepares people for it. Legs feel heavy, easy runs feel hard and doubts arrive. That passes. The work is already banked.
05 / Fuel
Melbourne Marathon Fuel and Hydration: What to Take and When
Split this in two. What you bring, and what the course provides. Runners get caught out when they assume the second will cover the first
What You Carry
Practise your fuelling in training at the same intervals you plan to use on Melbourne Marathon race day. If you have not taken a gel while running at marathon pace, race morning is a poor place to find out how your stomach responds. Carry what the course lacks and drink to a plan.
What the Course Provides
The 2026 course provides water at every listed station, Maurten drinks at selected stations and Maurten Gels at 25km and 33km. Flavours and cup type are not specified by the organiser
A personal drink station sits at approximately 24.2km. Maximum container height is 21cm including attachments, and the runner is responsible for identifying and collecting their own bottle.

Medical support and toilets are listed at the official stations. Locations can change, so race-week information takes precedence.
How to Use a Station Without Losing Rhythm
Pick your side early and commit. Slow slightly, pinch the top of the cup, drink and move. Walking through a station costs less than choking on a mouthful at pace. Runners chasing a time can skip alternate stations, though only if they have practised that in training.
07 / Weather
Melbourne Marathon Weather: What Should You Wear?
October mornings in Melbourne start cool and warm through the race. A runner who dresses for the start line is overdressed by 25km.
Deciding what to wear for Melbourne Marathon conditions belongs in race week, sourced from the Bureau of Meteorology in the days before the start.
Module: race-day kit selector. Four states, cool start, mild, warm, hot.

The Start Line Problem
You will stand around before the gun. Wear something warm you are happy to abandon, since the official Warm Clothing Bag Drop opens from 4:45am on Sunday and closes at 2:30pm. Your bib includes the required Warm Clothing tag. Do not place valuables in the bag.

Build Your Melbourne Marathon Race-Day Kit
Among the more practical Melbourne Marathon tips, this is where clothing becomes a list you can tick off.
Technical Top or Singlet
Singlets move more air. Technical tees give shoulder cover on a bright morning and suit cooler starts. Both need testing over a long run, since a seam that behaves at 10km can be raw at 35km.
The Running Singlet Elite Fireline Indigo uses SUB4's seamless PRO RACE construction, with rear ventilation and reflective trim for the pre-dawn walk to the start. For a cooler morning, the Running T-Shirt DryLyte Azura covers the shoulders without adding weight.
Shop men's running singlets and tops and women's running singlets and tops.
Race-Day Shorts
Length, liner and pocket placement are personal. A liner that works on a 15km run can chafe over a marathon, so test at distance.
The Running Shorts 2" Inch Pro Split Black has an inbuilt liner, adjustable waist, reflective trim and side split seams for stride clearance. Runners who chafe at the hem tend to get on better with the Running Shorts 2-in-1 Black.
Shop men's running shorts and leggings and women's running shorts and leggings.
Socks
The smallest decision with the largest consequence. Blisters can end a marathon regardless of fitness.
The Running Socks DRYLYTE Blister Free Low Rise White sits below the shoe collar, while the Running Socks DRYLYTE Blister Free 3/4 Crew Black-Fluoro adds ankle cover for anyone prone to rubbing there.
Shop running socks.
Cap and Sun Cover
A cap shades your eyes and gives you somewhere to pour water.
The Running Cap Ultra Long Distance Legionnaires Cool Grey carries adjustable panels, rear adjustment, integrated side mesh and an SPF 50+ rating, with neck cover for the exposed bayside kilometres. The Running Performance Cap Black is the lighter option when shade is less of a concern.
Shop caps and hats.
Warm-Up Layer
For the start line and the walk back afterwards. The Running/Fitness Long Sleeve T-Shirt Black works as a pre-race layer that comes off before the gun, and the SUB4 Shell Reflective Breathable X Jacket Black handles a wet morning.
Shop men's running jackets.
Sizing sits on the size guides page if you are ordering something new in time for race week.
Clothing is only half of it. For everything else going into your bag on Saturday night, work through the complete Melbourne Marathon packing checklist.

09 / Race morning
Melbourne Marathon Race-Day Checklist: From Wake-Up to the MCG
Built to be read at 4:30am on a phone
Night Before
Four things between waking and the start zone:
- Kit laid out flat
- Bib pinned on
- Fuel packed
- Alarm set twice
- Transport confirmed
Race Morning
Five things to settle before you sleep:
- Familiar breakfast
- Toilet before leaving
- Bag drop before closing
- Start zone with time spare
Arrive at least one hour before the start. Public transport is strongly recommended because of limited parking and traffic on Melbourne Marathon race day. Yarra Park parking opens at 3:30am on Sunday, costs $20 by card and is subject to capacity.
In the Start Zone
Get into your correct wave. Starting ahead of your pace group means weaving, and weaving costs you more time than the position gains.
The marathon uses a mass start with rolling clearance. Your timing chip activates as you cross the start arch, so the walk towards the line does not affect your overall time.
10 / Avoidable problems
7 Melbourne Marathon Mistakes That Can Ruin a Good Race
Anything that has not been through distance and effort is a risk dressed as an upgrade.
The opening kilometres feel free. They are borrowed.
By then you are already behind.
A late check confirms a clothing decision instead of creating one.
Weaving through slower runners burns energy you need at 35km.
Queues are long and they close. Build the time in.
Sitting on a pace group faster than your training says is a decision you pay for after 30km.
11 / After the race
What to Do After You Cross the Melbourne Marathon Finish Line
First Thirty Minutes
Walk gently, sleep as much as you can and leave the training log alone for a few days. Review the race once the emotion has settled, not on the night.
First Few Hours
Eat something with protein and carbohydrate. Change out of damp kit as soon as you can, since the temperature drop after a Melbourne Marathon race day catches people out
The Days After
Walk gently, sleep as much as you can and leave the training log alone for a few days. Review the race once the emotion has settled, not on the night.
